Health Minister Marjorie Michel announced the 1.2-billion-dollar extension on social media late on Wednesday.
It comes after provincial health ministers said losing the funding could affect patients and health-care jobs, on top of concerns about the future of the Canada Health Transfer.
Provincial and territorial health ministers meet in Winnipeg today, while Michel co-chairs Friday’s meeting.

The province has announced that Dr. Jesse Kancir will take over the role starting in January.
Kancir is currently the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health and has also served as regional medical officer of health since moving to the province in 2021.
Dr. Robert Strang, the province’s top doctor for the last two decades, is set to retire in the new year.
The Association of Atlantic Universities says the region’s schools have been disproportionately hurt by the Canadian government’s restrictions on international student enrolment. It says the number of international students at Atlantic universities has dropped by 48 per cent since the federal restrictions took effect in 2024. The C-E-O of the association says universities and communities in the Atlantic region are feeling the loss of these students — that many international students work and volunteer where they study, and small businesses and community organizations may be struggling with the loss of these students.
